Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Weezer. I had always known they were a good band with some really good songs, but I had never given them much thought. It feels now like I was coexisting with a band I had always liked, but had never gotten into the music of. "What?" I mean, I knew enough of them to like some of their songs and buy a few from iTunes, but I never really looked into them until–I hate to say it–I and my friend played Say it Ain’t So on Rock Band. I think then it finally hit me how awesome they are.
I have been listening to them primarily on this site called IMEEM. I found a playlist that has a whole bunch of Weezer songs on it, and I began learning more about their history. I discovered their albums, and which songs were from where, as well as characteristics of the albums: "The Green Album" has big guitar, Pinkerton is emotional and really ambitious, etc. Actually, at the time of its release Pinkerton didn’t sell well at all, and afterwards Weezer took a break for quite some time. But now Pinkerton is a favorite of many people who really know their stuff, and who subsequently generally dislike Weezer’s newer stuff. I personally have been listening to Pinkerton and Maladroit a lot. I’m trying not to so much right now, though, before I actually buy the albums.
Buying the albums is another thing. With the magic of the internets it’s extremely easy to pirate music, or just buy it from some place like Amazon or iTunes. But I prefer to have the CD itself, just to have, yes, and also to play in the car. For no, I have not the mp3 player hookup system in any of my parents cars. And also I don’t like the leash of mp4 files. Plus, I just like the owning-ness of having the CD. And in my surge of newfound fandom, I eased my geeking-out by making a list of the Weezer albums/EP’s, with intent to checkmark/cross-off items as I acquire them. This serves very little practical purpose at all. I just enjoyed doing it.
After Album 6’s release, I’m gonna have to go see them perform live. I mean, I’m gonna have to. It’s gonna happen.
